According to former Republican Representative Liz Cheney, her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, would support Democratic contender Kamala Harris in November rather than Republican nominee Donald Trump.
At the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin, Texas, on Friday, the former congresswoman from Wyoming declared, “Dick Cheney will be voting for Kamala Harris.”
Liz Cheney made her own announcement that she would support Harris, noting “the danger that Donald Trump poses,” only a few days before to this revelation.
The former congressman, who was a harsh critic of the outgoing president, had previously told CNN that she was determined to take all necessary steps to prevent Trump from winning the presidency again. On Friday, she made the suggestion that her father held similar opinions.
“When you consider the current state of affairs and the gravity of the situation, you should know that my father firmly believes—as he has stated in public—that there has never before existed a person in our nation who poses such a serious threat to our democracy as Donald Trump,” she stated in Austin.
Dick Cheney is a devoted conservative who served as George W. Bush’s vice president, was a long-time congressman from Wyoming, and held multiple leadership positions in the House Republican Caucus. His endorsement of Harris is a startling decision.
The Harris team emphasised Cheney’s endorsement on Wednesday night and mentioned other Republicans who have supported her, such as former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan and Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger.
“That the Vice President has Congresswoman Cheney’s support makes him proud.” As said in a release, campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon described the candidate as a patriot who loves this nation and prioritises our democracy and the Constitution.
Cheney, a strong opponent of Trump and the daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, has previously told CNN that she is determined to take all necessary steps to prevent the former president from taking office again.
In an attempt to lessen Trump’s sway in the 2022 midterm elections, Cheney backed opponents of his deceptive claims that the 2020 election was rigged. Her political action committee bought an advertisement urging Arizonans to vote against Republican nominees for Secretary of State Mark Finchem and Governor Kari Lake. That year, she also campaigned across party lines for two moderate Democrats in close House contests.
