16-year-old suspect in custody; Maryland student, 15, shot and killed in high school lavatory

According to police, a 15-year-old student in Maryland died after he was allegedly killed by another student in the high school lavatory.

At a press conference on Friday, September 6, Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler stated that the event happened at Joppatowne High School in Joppa, Maryland.

“A men’s restroom on the first floor was the scene of the shooting. The suspect fled the school and the lavatory following the first gunshot, according to Gahler. “Other individuals in the school brought the victim out into the hallway, where he was immediately attended to by nurses as part of the public school system.”

“Within the first two minutes, we had our first response deputy on the scene,” Gahler stated. “Within 15 minutes, more than 100 police officers were here from all of our local partner agencies.”

Airlifted to a trauma centre, the 15-year-old was declared in “serious condition.” It is thought that the suspect, a 16-year-old student, fired a “single shot,” but he was “apprehended within minutes” after making his getaway “a short distance away.”

It was the suspect’s first day at the school, said to Gahler, even though the district is only “four days into its school year.”

Although they are “not allowed to talk” with the suspect, he claimed that officials have “sufficient information that he will be charged in association with the shooting without the need to be interviewed.”

“If you will, overwhelming evidence. However, he reiterated that the probe is still underway.

In a post on X, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office verified that the gunshot was a “single incident.”

“Please be aware that there isn’t an active shooter here; this is a singular occurrence. Stay away from the area. Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church is the reunion centre where parents may pick up their students,” the message stated.

Gahler announced the 15-year-old’s passing at a second press conference on Friday. His name was Warren Curtis Grant.

“The family was just notified within the last half hour at the hospital,” he said. The suspect “has not yet been charged but will be charged,” according to Gahler’s confirmation. The identity of the suspect is still unknown to the general public.

A statement from Harford County Public Schools on its website also verified Warren’s passing.

“It is with great sadness that we share that the victim of the shooting did not survive,” the statement stated. “At a media briefing that has just concluded, Sheriff Gahler identified the victim as Warren Grant, a 15 year old student at Joppatowne High School.”

“Again, we ask you to join us in keeping Warren’s family, friends, and the students and staff at JOHS in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time,” the statement said. “We will have additional supports in place for students as we process this tragedy as a school community.”
