
September 6, 2024, Abuja, Nigeria /APO Group / — From September 4–11, 2024, the National Peace Council of Ghana and the Department of Political Affairs, Peace, and Security of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission are organising an interactive training workshop for political actors and stakeholders in Ghana.
With reference to the 2001 Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, the workshop seeks to give interested parties a chance to recognise and value the ECOWAS Constitutional Convergence Principles as well as other frameworks for the transparent and orderly conduct of elections. Furthermore, the engagement provides a chance to restate the National Peace Council’s and ECOWAS’s commitment to using discussion and mediation to settle electoral disputes.
Additionally, the workshop seeks to offer a forum for organised, multistakeholder discussion on matters pertaining to the planning and conduct of the upcoming general elections scheduled for December 7, 2024, amongst members of political parties, law enforcement, the Electoral Commission (EC), and civil society organisations. Through group talks, role-plays, and plenary discussions, it provides the chance for participants to gain some useful strategies and abilities for communication and mediation as crucial instruments for handling election disputes and conflicts.
Welcoming participants to the workshop, the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador (Dr) Abdel-Fatau Musah, represented by Mr. Ebenezer Asiedu, Head of Democracy and Good Governance, reaffirmed the commitment of ECOWAS to promoting dialogue as a critical tool for managing stakeholders’ expectations around electoral processes. In a Goodwill Message, the representative of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Ms. Florence Mensah commended ECOWAS and the National Peace Council for the partnership and timeliness of the workshop, noting the readiness of the Electoral Commission to organize free, fair, peaceful, and inclusive elections.
