Lagos commuters and truckers are irritated by tariff hikes brought on by a shortage of fuel.

Due to the increase in gasoline prices, commuters and carriers have been complaining about the lack of premium motor spirit, or fuel. As a result, transporters have been forced to raise their fees to different destinations.

The price of petrol was raised on Tuesday by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), going from between N568 and N617 per litre to between N855 and N897 per litre.

Although the product sells for between N900 and N1,500 nationwide, some filling stations are still closed, and those that are open have long lines of cars obstructing the road.

Commercial truck drivers in Lagos State raised their charges to offset potential losses from the increase in gasoline prices.

A bus fare from Agbado-Ijaiye to Oshodi increased from N600 to N1,000, from Agege to Ikeja from N200 to N400, and from Ikeja to Ishaga from N600 to N800, according to checks done by Peoples Gazette on Friday.

A bus fare to Ajah at Oshodi increased to N1,500 from N1,000; the cost of a long bus to Eko Idumota increased from N500 to N700; and the cost of a bus to Obalende increased from N800 to N1,000.

Tolani Ayeni, a commuter in Oshodi, told The Gazette that she finds it difficult to replenish some of her sold goods, therefore transport costs have eaten up the majority of her sales.

It’s really unfortunate. You still need to provide for your wife and kids, therefore even though I’ll be selling the market, my profits will now go towards buying a car. Hope you are aware that classes have resumed. There are school costs,” he bemoaned.

Bello Moshood, a Keke NAPEP rider in Agege, bemoaned the low patronage despite many commuters being at the bus stops but unable to afford the higher prices. Prior to today, he claimed to have spent two days unable to fuel his tricycle.

“All the filling stations around my house were not selling on Tuesday or Wednesday,” he claimed. My turn did not come to an end before the sole fuel seller did. I later made the more expensive purchase on the illegal market.

As there are many people waiting at the bus stop, some of them won’t go in because the cost of transportation has gone up. It’s not our fault; they have no idea how difficult it is for us to obtain fuel, nor do they care to know how much we paid for it.

Heineken Lokpobiri, the state minister for petroleum, gave Nigerians the assurance that petrol will be accessible by the weekend following a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday.

“What matters is that products are accessible throughout the nation, and we anticipate that products will be available throughout the nation by the weekend,” Mr. Lokpobiri stated.
