Benson Upah, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) spokesperson, has issued a warning, stating that Nigerians would have to pay 5,000 per litre for petrol.
In the midst of a nationwide petrol price increase and fuel shortage, Upah made this claim in an interview with Weekend Trust.
He went on to say that the arrangement the union negotiated with the federal government is in violation of the recent increase.
“I want to tell you something, what this signals is that Nigerians have not seen the end yet, we may end up paying nothing less than ₦5,000 per litre for fuel in this country,” Upah remarked in response to the recent hike in gas prices. Although we hope not to go there, Nigerians will make the final decision if we do.
Upah stated that during talks on a new minimum wage, the government proposed two options: either raise the minimum wage to 250,000 while allowing petrol prices to climb to between 1,500 and 2,000, or accept a wage increase to 62,000 and maintain the current fuel prices. Upah spoke about the Federal Government breaking promises on increasing the price of petrol, as previously reported by Naija News.
He voiced his anger and said that the government led by President Bola Tinubu had betrayed faith by implementing the current price increase.
