Car owners, alarmed by the sudden spike in petrol prices, are giving up on their cars in favour of tricycles and motorcycles for personal transportation.
Speaking with Sunday Vanguard, a variety of Kano locals bemoaned their inability to handle the ongoing increase in gas prices and their choice to look for other forms of transportation.
Malam Tukur, a resident, claimed that because he was unable to pay the current fuel prices, he turned to purchasing motorcycles.
“Since the gasoline subsidy was removed, I have been spending N90,000 a month on fuel, which costs me N3,000 a day. With the recent increase, I was spending N5,000 a day on petrol, for a total monthly expenditure of N150,000. I made the decision to purchase a motorbike. For Abdullahi Kano, the narrative was the same: “I decided to purchase a motorbike due to the unexpected increase in petrol prices that occurred recently.” To be very honest, I have made significant financial savings since I purchased the bike. When I used my car for everyday errands, I used to spend N5,000 on petrol every day. However, once I purchased the bike, I began saving more than N4,000 per day.
Another resident, Muhiz Yakubu, claimed that the high cost of fuel was the reason he switched to using commercial tricycles for his daily errands.
“Aside from the increase in fuel prices, I still need to service my automobile, therefore I’ve opted to park it. When I had my automobile serviced around four months ago, I paid between N15,000 and N16,000. I’ve been informed that it exceeds N20,000. My automobile needs to be parked before it knocks. We are unable to carry on in this manner. “My wife is pregnant, and I need to save money before she gives birth, so I should park the car,” Yakubu remarked.
