The public hearing that was initially scheduled for September 10–12 by the Senate ad hoc committee, which was formed to look into allegations of economic sabotage in Nigeria’s petroleum industry, has been postponed indefinitely.
The committee’s chair, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), made the announcement late on Sunday.
The committee, a 15-person panel that was established on July 22, 2024, was given the mission of identifying organisations and actions that, during the previous ten years, had a negative influence on the petroleum industry.
Examining the billions of dollars being spent on refinery turnaround maintenance—a problem that has long plagued the sector with inefficiencies and financial strain—is one of its main goals.
Senator Bamidele stated that the committee was committed to reschedule the hearing at a later time, citing the necessity for more thorough consultations and “legislative exigencies aimed at further deepening due diligence.”
He gave every stakeholder the assurance that they would be fully informed before the revised schedule was announced.
In his statement, Senator Bamidele emphasised that the postponement was made “purely and solely in the national interest” and apologised for any inconvenience that may have been experienced by any parties involved, individually or collectively.
