Two days after the flood in Maiduguri, many residents are still stranded or missing, thus the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the military, and other organisations have stepped up rescue efforts.
In an interview with NAN in Maiduguri on Thursday, Mr. Sirajo Garba, the North East Acting Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, said this.
He reported that on Thursday, hundreds of people who were stranded in their houses were freed.
In particular, in wards like Abbaganaram, Muna, and 505 estates, the military is conducting a search and rescue operation. We have also deployed high suspension vehicles and boats.
About 200 persons were rescued by NEMA between yesterday and today.
“Over 70,000 people have been profiled in seven camps, while over 1,000 people were rescued on the day of the incident.”
Garba stated, “The number cannot be ascertained now,” adding that NEMA has only released four corpse bags thus far.
“We might find more bodies as the water continues to recede,” he continued.
More than 40 people have been officially confirmed killed in the event, according to prior reports.
