Peter Obi, a past presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has stated that he would be open to thinking about running for vice president in the event that someone could do the job more effectively than he could.
This was said by the former governor of Anambra in a recent, exclusive interview with New Central TV that SaharaReporters watched on YouTube. He said that his goal is to persuade people to support Nigeria in the upcoming general election in 2027.
“Quite frankly, I’m not desperate to be Nigerian president,” Obi remarked in response to a query about whether he would accept to run for vice president in 2027. I really want Nigeria to succeed. I will (consider running for vice president) if I find someone who can do the work more efficiently.
“There are even those who argue that I shouldn’t come out in 2027. To them, I respond, put yourself out there. Furthermore, nobody will be placed on a scale.
Obi maintained that while he would not quit the Labour Party, he would think about joining forces with other lawmakers if their goals aligned with his own.
“Yeah, I would be here (at the Labour Party), and if somebody is coming for us to come together or negotiate, he needs to tell me what his goals are,” he went on.
“I refuse to support anyone in capturing the state or winning an election. Please explain to me how we plan to make sure that no child is left behind and how we plan to reintegrate the millions of children who are now not enrolled in school.
In the meantime, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by Julius Abure, demanded on Wednesday that the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) look into allegations of misappropriation of campaign funds in 2023 involving Obi, Aisha Yesufu, Pastor Itua Ighodalo, and leaders of the pan-Yoruba group Afenifere.
Abayomi Arabambi, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, expressed worries about the misappropriation of nearly N12 billion and $15 million in donations intended for the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential campaign during a news conference in Abeokuta.
The party’s top brass charged that Ighodalo and Aisha Yesufu were conspiring with Obi to embezzle campaign funds.
Arabambi called Obi a “political merchant,” one who planned the deceptive misappropriation of money.
In addition, he disapproved of Yesufu’s recent self-defence remarks in public, calling them an attempt to distort the facts.
Arabambi accused Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Akin Osuntokun, and Sola Ebiseni—three prominent figures in Afenifere—of holding onto more over N600 million in personal bank accounts.
He stated that the money was intended for the party’s campaign but was misdirected at Obi’s request.
