Edo building collapse: students trapped inside are evacuated while the government orders enquiries

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) students who were stranded in the collapsed three-story building have all been rescued, according to the Edo State Government.

This was revealed in a statement provided to newsmen in Benin City by Crusoe Osagie, the Special Advisor on Media Projects to the Governor of Edo State.

Osagie stated that a thorough inquiry has been requested by the state government to ascertain the immediate and distant reasons of the collapse, while also confirming that no fatalities were reported.

In addition, he said that an audit of the structural stability of other nearby buildings has been mandated by the government.

He said that the government had verified the three-story structure next to the University of Benin in Ugbowo, Benin City, on Ekhator Street, off Ekosodin Road, collapsing.

“All of the imprisoned pupils were retrieved alive and are receiving medical attention after a rescue squad was sent to the scene of the event.

There are currently no fatalities from the event, according to emergency responders who were dispatched to the location, including members of the Edo State Command and Control Centre and the Edo State Fire Service.

Officials from the state administration have been positioned there to give updates on the situation.

He remarked, “We are grateful for the bravery displayed by the emergency personnel as well as the community’s good Samaritans who helped to control the situation.”

The three students who were saved from the crumbling building are currently in stable condition at the hospital, according to University of Benin administration.

Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, a spokesman for the university, stated in a statement that the structure fell on Saturday morning after heavy rain that started on Friday afternoon.

The students were initially brought to the school’s health centre before two of them were subsequently moved to UBTH. The children were successfully rescued by the rescue squad, which included members of the Security and Fire Service departments, the Health Centre, students, and the police.
