In a letter to the British government, UEFA threatened to disqualify England from future competitions should there be any meddling with a proposed regulator.
The letter was written to UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy by Theodore Theodoris, the general secretary of UEFA, according to The Telegraph.
Theodoris made it clear that the “ultimate sanction for which would be excluding the federation from UEFA and teams from competition” and issued a warning against “any government interference in the running of football.”
Theodoridis highlighted independence even more after Sir Keir Starmer’s new Labour Government included provisions for a new regulator in the King’s Speech.
The regulator would oversee a licensing system that would guarantee clubs are managed sustainably, take over an enhanced owners and directors test, and provide supporters more influence over important choices.
