
According to Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, better known by his stage name Rema, every new Afrobeats artist that has come out since 2019 is copying the style he invented.
During his appearance on a recent edition of The Breakfast Club, he made the assertion.
The “Ozeba” crooner also asserted that he was the first to announce new musicians’ debuts with extended plays.
I entered the music industry with a template in hand. My approach was distinct from how new artists emerge and take the lead. The EP trend was started by me. Since 2019, every [new Afrobeats] musician has followed the same route, releasing an EP as soon as they debut,” he said.
Rema claimed that he must take the lead in promoting his innovations in Afrobeats because many people would prefer not to give him credit for them.
“Many would dispute [my Afrobeats innovation].” It bothers me when I feel like an Afrobeats Messiah.
People don’t always enjoy it when young people applaud themselves. It’s not always your place to speak. There are instances when the truth is true, but you shouldn’t speak it.
He said, “There are times when I can’t wait for the originals to say it, but because nobody is, I might have to say it myself.
