There are conflicting accounts of Nwosu’s termination from the role he had been in since Governor Soludo took office in 2022.
Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo appointed Dr. Law Mefor as the new Commissioner for Information on Tuesday. Mr. Paul Nwosu was fired by the governor due to supposed inefficiency.
There are conflicting accounts of Nwosu’s termination from the role he had been in since Governor Soludo took office in 2022.
Nwosu was fired due to ineptitude, according to some people close to the Government House, but other people who are also associated with Governor Soludo’s administration claimed the former commissioner was requested to step down.
Christian Aburime, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Soludo, declined to comment when SaharaReporters asked him about the circumstances surrounding Nwosu’s dismissal, but he did clarify that Mefor would take over for him.
“Kindly wait for the government official statement,” Aburime stated. He then verified Nwosu’s replacement in a statement headlined “Soludo Swears in Dr. Law Mefor as the New Commissioner for Information,” which he forwarded to SaharaReporters.
“Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR performed the function at the State Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Awka,” stated Aburime’s statement.
At a time when fast and accurate information transmission is more important than ever, Dr. Mefor is taking office.
Governor Soludo claims that the new information commissioner will revitalise the state’s information apparatus because of his extensive experience and knowledge.
“Dr Mefor made a suggestion that, in line with the governor’s goal, he intends to collaborate with media organisations to encourage media literacy among the general population, giving them the skills they need to critically assess material and stop the spread of false or misleading content.
In addition, the Commissioner pledged to modernise the state’s information ministry through the use of technology, increasing its responsiveness, effectiveness, and public accessibility. This would result in the creation of a ministry that would employ data-driven insights and analytics to support evidence-based policy and decision-making.
“Dr. Mefor is a seasoned writer, public speaker, and media personality who has worked in various capacities, providing research and analytical support to organisations across different industries. He is passionate about the role of the media in shaping public discourse and opinion. His career has spanned over 25 years.”
SaharaReporters did, however, manage to get Nwosu’s personally signed resignation letter. The letter is headed “Resignation of My Appointment” and is dated September 17, 2024. It is addressed to the Secretary of State Government.
Nwosu stated in his resignation letter, “I wish to resign my appointment as the Commissioner for Information, Anambra State,” without providing an explanation for his decision. After 10 years and six months of continuous service to the Anambra State Government, I believe it is time for me to go on to other endeavours.
“My spouse, Neta, and I express our sincere gratitude for the chance you have granted me to assist Anambra State.
“We are very confident that Anambra State will become the prosperous and livable homeland you promised our people with the policies and programs you have enunciated.”
The resignation of Nwosu, who held the position of Commissioner for Information for almost three years, has been welcomed by journalists in the state. He allegedly shied away from interacting with reporters during his time there and never addressed or spoke with them directly.
A lot of journalists were relieved when Nwosu left because of the friction that arose from his lack of accessibility and communication.
