State Commissioner of Police CP Aboki Danjuma has called on the public to show civility ahead of the Imo State local government elections on Saturday, September 21. He has advised people to refrain from acting in a way that could impede the electoral process both before and after the exercise.
In order to ensure a seamless voting process, the Police also declared that on election day, there would be restrictions on vehicular movement from 00:00 to 18:00. Only authorised media, medical professionals, fire departments, and accredited electoral observers would be permitted to operate.
The Commissioner has put in place extensive security measures for the local government council elections that are set for September 21, 2024, according to a release from the Police Public Relations Officer’s desk, ASP Henry Okoye. The release further states that the measures were intended to guarantee a trustworthy, transparent, and secure electoral process throughout all 27 Local Government Areas.
According to the press release, the CP underlined how important it was for all political players to follow the rules established by the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission, or ISIEC. He also issued a warning, saying that in order to ensure fairness, armed security personnel could not accompany VIPs to polling places.
“Voters are reassured that their safety is still the top priority and are encouraged to participate actively.” To stop any breaches within their purview, Divisional Police Officers and Area Commanders would supervise security, according to Okoye.
The Imo State Police Command is committed to maintaining public order and making sure that election day runs well, as the Commissioner of Police reaffirmed, warning that any attempts to sabotage the electoral process will be faced with swift action.
