PDP Notifies EFCC, ICPC To Look Into Governor Aliyu’s N30 Billion Street Wire Fencing Project and Others In Sokoto

The PDP requests that these claims be looked into by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In regards to the purported N30 billion contract for street wire fencing, roundabouts, and other projects, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State is requesting an investigation into the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration of Ahmed Aliyu in Sokoto State.

The PDP requests that these claims be looked into by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In Nigeria, fighting financial crimes and corruption falls under the purview of the EFCC and ICPC.

The opposition party has called on the anti-graft authorities to look into the N1.2 billion contract for 25 boreholes, as well as the N30 billion contract for roundabouts and street wire fencing in Sokoto, which were allegedly not allocated for.

SaharaReporters was able to obtain a statement from the party that was signed by Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, the state publicity secretary, and expressed the party’s “deep sadness over the current situation, in which Sokoto state is catching the attention of the entire nation for reasons that have never been as negative as during the present APC administration of Ahmed Aliyu.”

“The current government in Sokoto has, not even halfway through its tenure, recorded milestones in mindless and suspicious misappropriation of public funds,” the Sokoto PDP declared, lamenting the state of affairs.

In addition to the N1.2 billion spent on fixing the 25 boreholes in the state capital and the N30 billion spent on installing wire fences around the streets of Sokoto, nearly a billion naira was set aside for the installation of street lights in the state capital, despite the fact that the poles needed to be painted and were outdated.

“Ahmed Aliyu’s spending binge includes the N1.2 billion budgeted for the restoration of five roundabouts in the city of Sokoto and the additional over N500 million for the construction of archways on every street leading to the government house.

Governor Ahmed is keeping things bad by squandering absurd sums of money to enclose Sokoto Metropolis’s streets with wire. Ironically, this is occurring in one of the states most severely impacted by the federal APC government’s poor economic policies.

We think it unfortunate that Sokoto State is currently setting the standard for financial recklessness in government under Ahmed Aliyu. The public is still reeling from the travesty of the governor’s N1.2 billion expenditure on 25 borehole repairs, the justification for which he is still finding it difficult to provide to the country.

That is in opposition to the current incident involving the governor’s wife, who is making headlines despite the terrible economic circumstances facing the majority of her state, for engaging in an irresponsible birthday Dollar spray.

The PDP is outraged, as is the whole people of Sokoto State, that the beleaguered governor is resorting to his customary, pitiful, and desperate attempts to divert public attention from his administration by slandering Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, his predecessor, instead of confronting this “squandermania.”

Nonetheless, our party is confident in saying that Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and his whole cabinet have never been afraid to submit to an inquiry over their time as Sokoto state government officials. Despite the fact that there has been no real progress in substantiating the false accusations of misconduct made against them, the former governor, members of his executive council, and top officials have voluntarily come before the Commission of Inquiry.

The most contentious spending pattern and scandalous procurement standards in Sokoto State’s history are found in the current Ahmed Aliyu administration. The most regrettable thing, in our opinion, about these absurd and pointless projects is how they were carried out, completely disregarding the law and industry best practices.

First off, neither the call for tenders nor the necessary consent from the State Executive Council were obtained before any of the project contracts were given. Faceless contractors who are chosen by cronies and at the whim of the government’s controllers complete the work.

The PDP observes that dissatisfaction is quickly growing among the ranks of Ahmed Aliyu’s own political party, the APC, and that this is adding to the party’s worry and opposition to his reckless waste of Sokoto State’s funds.

“The APC member of the House of Representatives for the Gudu Tangaza Constituency, Sani Yakubu, has given the governor a two-week ultimatum to account for the more than N200 billion in federal funds that the state’s local governments have received.

But, there isn’t much to explain Ahmed Aliyu’s one and a half-year rule. His cosmetic improvements are all focused on the state capital and are essentially limited to the area around Government House and GRA.

According to Sani Yakubu, there are no development projects in the rural areas utilising the enormous money that have been allotted; they are completely ignored. The current Sokoto State government, whether it is military or civilian, is without a doubt the most financially irresponsible administration in the state’s history and ought to be looked into by the appropriate agencies.

As a result, our party is insisting that the EFCC and ICPC look into Ahmed Aliyu’s administration’s financial practices. We specifically demand that the anti-graft institutions fulfil their legal duty by initiating a prompt investigation into the cost and procedural propriety of the N30 billion spent on wire fencing the state capital’s streets.

The statement ended, “Our party believes that this is in the best interests of justice and fairness for the masses of Sokoto State and Nigeria at large.”

Despite the initial absence of budget appropriation, reports have surfaced that contractors managing the building of five roundabouts in Sokoto city and the N30 billion street wire fencing project have been paid.

Some state Assembly members were incensed by this occurrence, which led to the House being presented with a supplemental budget of N100 billion. Lawmakers who had initially objected were transferred from their committee chairmanships in what appeared to be a reaction.

He declared, “All of the accusations stem from the judicial panel of inquiry’s investigation into the sale of the state government’s shares by the former Aminu Waziri Tambuwal administration, which was valued at N16 billion.

“The PDP is unable to provide evidence for the wire fence and other claims, and the EFCC and ICPC are respectable organisations that will not be intimidated or duped into taking up unfounded cases.
