Following the release of a widely shared video depicting the brutal treatment of a young guy during a drug-related arrest, the Imo State Police Command acted quickly.
Prince Amaechi, a 32-year-old man accused of drug trafficking, was involved in the event, which happened on September 16, 2024, in Ovoro-Uzomiri Umuosu, Naze, Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State. Amaechi, who was shackled, is seen resisted arrest in the video by cradling a two-month-old child.
Aboki Danjuma, the commissioner of police for Imo State, denounced the officers’ behaviour in response to public outcry and promptly issued an arrest warrant for them. The four officers are part of the Command’s Anti-Narcotics Unit. They are Corporal God’swill Okechukwu, Corporal Patrick Nwangbo, Corporal Justice Nnorom, and Corporal Goodluck Iwuagwu. They are being held pending disciplinary measures, which may include an orderly room trial.
Henry Okoye, a spokesman for the police, addressed the matter and stated that Amaechi, who is under investigation for conspiracy and drug trafficking, was being arrested per the warrant. While acknowledging that the suspect’s resistance to arrest worsened the situation, Okoye insisted that the cops ought to have acted more professionally in handling the case.
The Commissioner has directed a thorough inquiry, which is now being examined further by the IGP X-Squad in Imo State. Okoye gave the public the assurance that the police would maintain transparency throughout the inquiry and notify them of any updates.
While the inquiry is ongoing, the police asked the public to maintain their composure and refrain from disseminating false information.
