The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, has stated that it is prepared to prosecute former Kogi governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello on the N80.2 billion fraud charge levelled against him.
Bello needs to have his day in court, according to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, who made this assertion in an Abuja statement on Wednesday.
Bello would not be an exception, according to Oyewale, just like other indicted former ministers, ex-governors, other high-ranking government officials, industry captains, and online fraudsters on trial.
He said that attempts to obstruct the current probe and prosecution of the purported fraud case would be ineffective.
The anti-graft organisation is prepared to present all relevant evidence to support its position in court, the EFCC spokesman added.
He states that the panel is still dedicated to seeing that the money laundering allegations against Bello proceed through the legal system.
“The EFCC is excited to confront the former governor in court so that the mountain of meticulously gathered evidence may be made public.
“Bello deserves his day in court, regardless of the use of bribery, emotional appeals to public sympathy, or blackmail.”
No matter whose ox is gored, the EFCC would not back down from its no sacred cow stance. The fact that corruption retaliates is not lost on the EFCC.
“No matter the recourse to blackmail, appeal to emotive public sympathy, or acts of brigandage, Bello must have his day in court,” he declared.
