Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has threatened to utilise ten percent of internally generated revenue to satisfy the entitlements of striking teachers because of the FCT’s six area councils.
In response to enquiries from reporters on the FCT Administration’s involvement in the standoff between the six area councils and primary school teachers, Wike made the threat on Thursday.
DAILY PULSE notes that on September 18, the Nigerian Union of Teachers’ (NUT) Federal Capital Territory Wing recommenced work stoppage due to unresolved welfare disputes with the territory’s six area councils.
The union suspended previous strikes in October 2023 and January 2024, and this one is a continuation of those.
The minister responded to the event by saying he had summoned the leaders of the NUT and the chairmen of the area municipalities to come up with a solution.
Our goal has been to ensure that the system is operating efficiently.
Nonetheless, it is regrettable that the teachers’ strike is still ongoing. It is really regrettable.
“If the teachers are not paid, I will utilise the 10% of IGR that we typically give to the local councils to cover the teachers’ salaries.
“I refuse to fold my hands and let that occur. When their teachers stay at home and their kids suffer, no responsible government will stand by.
He remarked, “I won’t tolerate that; I won’t.”
