Impending strike: Fears grow as ASUU convenes an important meeting

The Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) national leadership is scheduled to convene in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, today, Thursday.

Following a number of pre-strike notices that the union sent to the Federal Government due to the government’s failure to keep earlier agreements, the meeting has taken place.

According to the DAILY POST, ASUU threatened to close down the country’s institutions if their long-standing grievances were not resolved when they gave notice of a 14-day strike to the federal government on September 24.

The union had previously sent the government a 21-day notice on August 18 requesting that their requests be addressed. This notice was followed by the current 14-day ultimatum.

ASUU is scheduled to present a “State of the Nation” address during today’s meeting.

There is a sense of uneasiness about an imminent strike, particularly among students.
