An Israeli attack in Beirut overnight is said to have targeted Hashem Safieddine, a possible successor to late Hezbollah head Hassan Nasrallah, after a series of missile interceptions over northern Israel.
Although Safieddine’s death is still under investigation, an Israeli official told CNN on Friday that she was really killed.
After sirens went out in Haifa and the Galilee region, nearly two dozen rockets were seen entering Israeli territory from Lebanon.
Rockets were intercepted by Israel’s defence systems above the Haifa skyline on Friday morning, according to Reuters video footage.
About 20 projectiles were reportedly found in the Haifa Bay and Western Galilee regions between 7:01 and 7:04 a.m. local time, according to the Israel Defence Forces (IDF). The IDF stated that “the rest falling in open areas” after the majority were intercepted.
Some of the shrapnel from the interceptions caused property damage near Kiryat Yam, close north of Haifa, although no injuries were recorded by Israel Police.
After 7:23 a.m., when alarms were off in the Upper Galilee region, “multiple projectiles” were also found. The military said, “The remainder of the projectiles fell in open areas, and some were successfully intercepted.”
Research is still ongoing, so it’s unclear how much damage was caused by the missiles.
