EFCC Chair: Contracts and procurement are connected to almost 90% of public corruption.

Over 90% of public corruption cases under investigation are connected to contracts and procurement procedures, according to a statement made on Thursday by Ola Olukoyede, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

During a welcome visit to the EFCC’s corporate offices in Abuja, Olukoyede was given a speech by the top management team of TETFund, which was headed by its Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono.

More than 90% of public corruption that we are facing or looking into occurs in the areas of contract and procurement activities, according to a statement made by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale. Olukoyede was mentioned in the statement.

Thus, in order to advance the partnership, we will be eager to work with you considerably more.

Olukoyede further demanded that the TETFund dedicate more of its attention to evaluating and overseeing the infrastructure projects that it funds at institutions of higher learning throughout the nation.

“We’ve had some petitions regarding the non-execution of your projects, so I want to encourage you to take a greater interest in their execution,” he stated. You undoubtedly have a department or committee dedicated to project assessment and monitoring; encourage them to devote greater effort to their work to ensure that you don’t just give money for projects and then watch as contractors grab the money and run.

Olukoyede also asked the head of the TETFund to follow the rules of integrity and accountability, acknowledging that he has a great deal of trust when it comes to using public funds.

“So much faith has been placed on your shoulders with regard to the source of your revenue, which is the money of taxpayers,” he remarked. Trust is a heavy responsibility, especially when you’re not sure you’re going to focus on the appropriate thing to do.

There will occasionally be diversions, especially in the setting where we are, when people are accustomed to taking shortcuts. However, it is up to us to act morally. Because of this, I would like to exhort you to always act morally.

In his speech, Ochono promised the commission that the TETFund would help them and asked for cooperation, particularly in directing resource managers in Nigerian higher institutions away from financial misdeeds.

We want to provide you with the support you deserve,” he stated. You are doing the right thing, as we all know, and we urge you to keep doing so. We would want to resubmit our plea for increased cooperation as an organisation that is working to ensure the prudent use of its resources.

“We are appealing because we partnered with the BPP to address procurement infractions, and we are aware that you have a training school where we can send leaders from our institutions, along with their bursars and procurement personnel, to learn from your experts how to prevent financial infractions.”
