In Borno State, the Yoruba community has requested immediate assistance for 4,600 members who were impacted by the recent flooding that swamped 70% of Maiduguri and its surroundings.
Saka Abiodun, the president of the Yoruba community in Borno State, made the appeal on Thursday night while chatting with reporters in Maiduguri. He claimed that the people most impacted are craftsmen who are fighting for their lives.
Abiodun bemoaned the destruction of homes, livelihood sources, and property caused by flood disasters, pointing out that victims had lost everything they had worked so hard to acquire.
Currently, we have a list of 4,600 individuals affected by the recent flood tragedy, and the majority of them are craftspeople, such as mechanics, traders, vulcanisers, business centre owners, and providers of
It is becoming more and more difficult for us to obtain needs like food, clean water, and shelter. Known for its tenacity, our town is about to crumble.
“Many of our people had nothing except the clothes they were wearing; in fact, they had lost everything.” Customs Areas, London Ciki, Rawan Sanfi, Gidan-Danbe, and Gomboru are all severely impacted, as is well known. Before the disaster, the majority of these people lived in these locations, he said.
Abiodun underlined that the flood displaced hundreds of families, wrecked homes and infrastructure, and caused a shortage of access to basic essentials like shelter, food, clean water, and healthcare.
He called on private citizens, business entities, and public authorities to assist them.
“The community desperately needs relief goods, such as food, clean water, clothing, blankets, medical equipment, and temporary shelter, to lessen the suffering.
He appealed for donations, saying that “cash is also needed to rebuild damaged homes and support families who have lost everything.”
The Yoruba Community Council in Maiduguri, First Bank of Nigeria’s Maiduguri Branch, Account Number 2018253841, is where donations can be made, Abiodun continued.
“Interested parties can contact Saka Ganiyu Abiodun (President) at 08023549509 & 07032137936 for more information or to arrange donations.”
However, the president of the community praised the state government’s efforts for the quick actions it took to help the flood victims.
