Motunrayo Olaniyi, 30, is accused of fatally stabbing his recently married wife Olajumoke at Amazing Grace Estate, Elepe, in the Ikorodu neighbourhood of Lagos State.
The pair reportedly got into a furious dispute on Friday, which led to the incident.
In a statement released on Saturday by its spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed the event and said that Motunrayo had repeatedly stabbed the 25-year-old wife during the dispute, locked her in the room, and set it on fire.
He went on to say that following the act, the suspect also hurt himself.
Nevertheless, it was said that after putting out the fire, a group of police officers found Olajumoke’s deceased body, which had wounds to his abdomen.
A portion of the statement said, “On October 4, Ikorodu Division received a distress call alleging that a recently married couple, Motunrayo Olaniyi, 30, and his wife Olajumoke, 25, had gotten into a domestic altercation in their room at Amazing Grace Estate, Elepe, Ikorodu.
“During this procedure, the husband allegedly injured himself while stabbing his wife to death, locking her in the room, and setting it on fire.
After receiving a distress call, police from the Ikorodu Division arrived and extinguished the fire. They discovered the lifeless body of Olajumoke, bleeding from the abdomen.
Olaniyi was saved and taken to a neighbouring hospital, where he received treatment and was eventually released, according to the police spokesperson. From there, he was placed under police custody.
He claimed that following the altercation, a preliminary investigation showed that the suspect had stabbed his wife and injured himself slightly.
