According to Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, the non-release of money has prevented the implementation of the recent increase in allowances for corps members.
According to DAILY PULSE, the Federal Government has authorised raising the monthly allowance of corps members from N33,000 to N77,000, with effect from July 2024.
The National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission validated the hike in a letter dated September 25, 2024, which was signed by the commission’s chairman, Ekpo Nta, according to a statement released by the NYSC.
The government did not, however, provide the additional payment to corps members in September, even after making the official announcement.
The NYSC DG clarified to BBC Hausa Service on Saturday that the government has not yet made available the money needed to implement the increased allowance.
Ahmed further disclosed that although there was a pay rise for NYSC employees four or five months ago, the raise has not yet been put into effect.
He declared, “The pay increases for our staff personnel as well as corps members were announced four or five months ago, but they haven’t been put into effect yet. Although the money has not yet been sent to us, we are optimistic that the new salary will be implemented shortly.
We have been informed that their monthly stipend has been increased as of July 29, 2024, however the information we currently have does not clarify when the higher allowance will be paid.
