The Lagos State House of Assembly has, among other things, placed Alimosho Local Government Area Chairman Jelili Sulaimon on extended leave due to allegations of wrongdoing.
Due to the chairman’s alleged non-compliance, resistance, and obstinate attitude towards the legislative House, the MPs unanimously suspended him during Monday’s plenary session.
The legislators decided that the management of the local government should be turned over to Akinpelu Johnson, the deputy chairman of the council.
A motion to suspend Jelili was made by Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs. He mentioned that in April 2024, there was unrest in the Alimosho Local Government’s Iyana-Ipaja area, which led to the death of one Mr. Michael Ajayi.
It was found that Jelili was the one who had planned the disruption, according to Okanlawon, whose committee was assigned the duty of looking into the reason of the disturbance.
He pointed out that although all pertinent parties were asked to submit their ideas, Jelili persisted in acting inappropriately towards the committee.
Okanlawon pointed out the council chairman’s refusal to comply with the Assembly’s directions and his squandering of public monies.
As a result, he demanded that Jelili be suspended immediately in compliance with the pertinent provisions of the 1999 Constitution Amendment.
He declared, “He should be suspended immediately and Akin Johnson, the vice chairman, should take over with immediate effect.”
Noheem Adams, the majority leader of the house, backed the move to suspend Jelili, pointing out that doing so would inspire other chairmen of local government to maintain standards.
“The chairman of the Alimosho council disregards the budget and procurement procedures. “I agree that the chairman should be placed on indefinite leave due to his repeated acts of misconduct,” he stated.
The House Committee on Public Accounts for Local Government’s Chairman, Hon. Nureni Akinsanya, also cited a State Auditor-General report about Jelili’s operations.
The investigation exposed serious inconsistencies in the council chairman’s financial records and emphasised his continued non-compliance with financial standards.
Highlighting these differences, Akinsanya backed Okanlawon’s demand that Jelili be suspended.
The Assembly’s resolution was sent to all pertinent authorities by the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, at the request of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who chaired the meeting.
