The 23 freshly elected local government council chairmen in the state of Benue have been sworn in by Governor Hyacinth Alia.
During the Monday event in Makurdi, Alia assigned responsibility and openness to the newly appointed council chairs.
The Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) conducted local government elections on Saturday and Sunday, during which the chairmen were chosen.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates won all 23 chairmanship and 276 councillorship seats, according to the results released by BSIEC.
The governor reminded the LG chairmen that giving local governments authority has implications and asked them to exercise responsibility, serve the public interest, and exercise caution in all that they undertake.
For efficient service delivery, he recommended them to work in tandem with the state and federal governments, stating that no level of government operates in isolation.
In addition, Alia put them under pressure to maintain the best standards of governance in their individual councils while working hard and showing leadership.
The governor also pleaded with them to avoid disappointing the large number of voters who supported their wins.
Alia gave the new council leaders advice, telling them to stay in their designated areas of responsibility and concentrate on delivering democratic deliverables to the people.
“This event represents a turning point in the history and prospects of the LG government in Benue, particularly in regards to the grassroots supporters who turned out in large numbers on Saturday to support you in the election.
“Remember that serving others and making sacrifices come before personal glory when you are a leader.
“I asked you to always work with us at the state level to put policies and initiatives that help our rural communities into action,” the governor declared.
