A few weeks into the governor’s administration’s midterm anniversary, the opposition All Progressives Congress, or APC, in Osun State, demanded that the Osun State Executive Council be dissolved and denounced the behaviour of the commissioners in Governor Ademola Adeleke’s cabinet.
It’s not out of order, therefore, to state that the cabinet of Governor Adeleke is overdue for dissolution in order to inject vibrant blood who could key into his self-acclaimed vision and effectively add substantial value into it in the overall interest of the development of the state, according to a statement released by the party and signed by Kola Olabisi, Director of Media and Information.
Instead of relying on the nominees that the party leaders donated to him out of pure patronage, Governor Adeleke should have the guts to select his own team this time around. Doing so would have prevented him from fitting square pegs into square holes by taking into account the candidates’ qualifications and experience.
“It is noted that we have never had it worse in this state, as certain commissioners are redundant and obscurity, known only for their frequent attendance at social events on the weekends, where they are free to reveal their identities to the masters of ceremonies.”
The current state of affairs is not ideal for the state’s elementary and secondary school students, who are unable to name more than one or two cabinet members offhand due to the offices’ relative obscurity compared to earlier eras.
Some of the commissioners and special advisers in Governor Adeleke’s administration have been observed to have adopted the traits of traditional farmers, always using hoes as farming tools for their own egotistical benefit.
Governor Adeleke has no better opportunity than this to reorganise his cabinet because a half-time in any administration’s life is not a plaything.
Reiterating that the demand for the dissolution of the cabinet is in the best interests of the state as a whole, the Osun APC also demanded an audit of the names and total number of aides that Governor Adeleke had appointed.
We also want to know the numbers, names, and offices of other appointees who hold the positions of Special Advisers without cabinet, Senior Special Assistants, and Special Assistants. This is to help ease the tension caused by the rumour that some of these appointees have never left this country, much less visited Osun State.
The number and identities of political appointees whose salaries are being paid from the public budget, which is the common patrimony of the state’s citizens, are information that the governed have an unalienable right to know.
We will wait for the Office of the Secretary to the State Government’s (SSG) response, which includes distributing such letters of appointment, if the governor is too busy to handle this request.
“The public is aware that Osun State, led by Governor Adeleke, has the greatest number of political aides among Nigeria’s governors, despite the state’s unfavourable position in terms of economic graduation on a viability basis.”
