The World Bank-sponsored Ideato Erosion Project was abandoned, according to Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the party’s candidate for governor in the 2023 Imo election under the leadership of Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Through Ikenna Onuoha, his Special Media Adviser, the PDP national scribe made hints that the project’s termination was due to the World Bank’s purported refusal to permit the Imo State Government to oversee it and pay a N500 million counterpart fund.
In response to the recent environmental risks brought on by erosion, which has blocked off numerous settlements and slowed down socioeconomic activity in the area, Anyanwu raised the accusation.
After the administration reportedly disregarded the terms of the World Bank contract, he accused the Uzodinma government of wilfully permitting the erosion threat in Ideato North and South LGAs to continue destroying property owned by Imo citizens.
A proactive government, according to Anyanwu, does not require the approval of the people before assuming its constitutional duties; however, in the instance of the APC Imo State Government, these duties have been minimised in favour of personal benefit.
“The APC government in the state is callous, unresponsive, and unproactive towards the aspirations of the populace.
“It is most unwholesome, pathetic, and detrimental to the fortune of the state that the people of Ideato nation and other parts of the State find it difficult to access the State capital on a motorable road despite the government having enormous resources at its disposal,” the speaker said.
The media advisor went on to say that Uzodinma’s administration purportedly terminated a contract that had been started by earlier governments with the World Bank to address the erosion threat in Ideato, calling this debasing.
The question is, “If this government can treat the masses in this manner, what other democratic benefits will Uzodinma’s administration provide to the people of Imo after they demonstrated a high degree of shame, denigration, and infamy, as well as a strong distaste for and complete abandonment of a N10 billion erosion control project?”
It is unfortunate to suggest that the catastrophic erosion threat in Ideato North and South LGAs would have been addressed if Uzodinma’s APC-led government had permitted this project to proceed,” he continued.
