ASUU strikes would end under Tinubu, says Akume

According to George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, President Bola Tinubu’s government would put an end to the ongoing strikes by university instructors operating under the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

He urged the ASUU leadership to consistently choose discussion over walkouts.

Following a threat from the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Federal Government convened a 31-member panel to revise the agreement in an attempt to prevent a new strike. This is when Akume made his statement.

But the SGF gave Nigerians hope that under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, strikes will end.

According to a statement released on Wednesday by OSGF’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, Akume revealed this during a courtesy visit to Abuja by the Conference of Alumni Association of Nigerian Universities’ leadership, which was led by Prof. Yakubu Ochefu.

In part, the statement said, “The SGF assured that industrial action will soon be a thing of the past under the present administration and urged the leadership of tertiary institutions to always toe the path of dialogue rather than resorting to strike.” The association was urged to support the government’s efforts in the development of the nation’s tertiary institution.

According to Akume, the Federal Government is dedicated to realigning the country’s educational system to promote sustainable growth.

He pointed out that any country that plays about with education is playing around with the future of its people.

“A nation that toys with education toys with the destiny of its citizens,” stated Akume, “cannot advance without investing in education.” Every Nigerian, regardless of background, should have access to high-quality education, according to President Tinubu.

Akume praised the higher Education Trust Fund for making enormous progress towards constructing high-quality facilities in each of the nation’s six geographic zones for higher institutions.

In a previous speech, Ochefu, the president of the Conference of Alumni Association of Nigerian Universities, said that the organisation was looking to work with the government to strengthen tertiary institutions in the nation by increasing value for individual alma maters.

In addition, he made a plea to the federal government to take into account its members when appointing people to federal boards and governing councils of postsecondary educational institutions; those who deserve it should also be awarded national honours.
