In an early morning attack, bandits in Ammarawa killed four people and injured one, while in Dan Gani village, they killed one person and kidnapped seven others.
Following a series of coordinated raids by armed bandits on settlements in the Kankara Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State, at least 11 people have died, others have been injured, and multiple civilians have been abducted.
It was learnt that the attacks started earlier this week, terrorising the locals and upsetting farming operations in the impacted areas.
According to local sources cited by Daily Trust, the attacks began on Monday in Kukasheka hamlet, leaving four people dead and numerous others injured.
On Wednesday, the violence intensified and more people died in other villages.
In an early morning attack, bandits in Ammarawa killed four people and injured one, while in Dan Gani village, they killed one person and kidnapped seven others.
A woman by the name of Saude was abducted in Tudu village during a mid-morning attack at approximately nine in the morning.
Concerns over the lack of security and the growing threat to their lives and livelihoods have grown among the residents of Kankara LGA.
Fears of food insecurity in the area have increased as a result of the robbers’ actions, which have also made it difficult for farmers to access their harvests.
But locals expressed their dissatisfaction, complaining that banditry has made it practically difficult for them to safely harvest their crops.
A villager related a personal tragedy: two days after his brother was assassinated by the same group, his father was attacked on their property.
Even though his father had suffered a serious head injury, he died in the hospital nine days later.
A spokesperson for the Katsina State Police, ASP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, gave assurances that an inquiry into the attacks was in progress.
For years, Kankara has been a hotbed of banditry, and terrorists are still wreaking havoc there in spite of constant security precautions. As a result, the administration of Katsina State established the Community Watch Corps, a local security program that has been shown to lower attack frequency and intensity.
Still, robbers don’t back down and continue to launch daring raids during the day.
