According to its ambassador to the UN on Thursday, the US has accused Israel of escalating the suffering in the Gaza Strip and wants it to properly safeguard civilians living there.
Even though these dire circumstances were foreseen months ago, nothing has been done about them.
The UN Security Council was informed by Linda Thomas-Greenfield that this had to alter immediately.
“We urge Israel to act quickly to fulfil this commitment,” she continued.
More than 1.5 million Palestinians had fled to the humanitarian zone in the southern and central Gaza Strip, where, according to her, appalling conditions had already been reported.
Concerns have also been expressed regarding the actions taken by the Israeli government to limit supplies to Gaza.
In conjunction with the recent closure of the majority of border crossings and bureaucratic limitations on humanitarian supplies coming from Jordan, Thomas-Greenfield stated that “these restrictions would only have the effect of intensifying suffering in Gaza.”
“We should see less, not more, obstacles in the way of aid delivery,” she said.
She reiterated that Gaza’s boundaries should not be altered and that Palestinian citizens must be permitted to reconstruct their neighbourhoods.
Gaza is “unrecognisable,” as UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) chief Philippe Lazzarini declared to the UN Security Council.
He claimed that there are at least 400,000 besieged individuals in the region and that Gaza has turned into a cemetery for tens of thousands of people, many of them are youngsters.
