Yobe State towns devastated by flooding have received vital support from the North East Development Commission, which has given away non-food and food necessities to lessen the suffering of the residents.
This program is a component of the NEDC’s all-encompassing plan to solve the economic and humanitarian issues that the Northeast area is now confronting.
200 sacks of rice, 200 cartons of macaroni and spaghetti, 200 gallons of vegetable oil, and 200 nylon matting are all part of the aid package.
Professor Ali Ibrahim Abbas, the Yobe State Coordinator, who oversaw the distribution and represented the Commission’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mohammed Goni Alkali, underlined that the purpose of the relief supplies was to lessen the suffering that the affected people were going through.
Fune Local Government Executive Chairman Bagoni Bade sent his sincere appreciation to NEDC for their prompt support. He recognised the beneficial effects this initiative would have on the communities devastated by the floods and commended the commission for its commitment to enhancing the quality of life in the area.
With Yobe State experiencing severe floods that has harmed over 239,000 people and forced many of them to migrate to temporary shelters, this initiative is very important.
In addition to helping these communities with their immediate needs, the NEDC’s assistance is essential for promoting long-term rehabilitation and resilience.
“By providing the essential items, the NEDC is helping to mitigate the impact of the floods and support the affected communities in rebuilding their lives,” Ibrahim Auta, a resident of one of the recipient areas, told Arewa DAILYPULSE.
On the other hand, the Commission stated that the intervention “underlines its commitment to addressing the humanitarian and economic challenges facing the North East region.”
In a related move, the Yobe Executive Council authorised the payment of N1.4 billion to flood victims in the state.
Governor Buni, who authorised the transfer idea, spearheaded the momentous effort to assist flood victims.
Following a petition from Yobe State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Commissioner Dr. Mairo Ahmed Amshi, the decision was made to offer Multipurpose Cash Assistance to Yobe State flood victims in 2024.
During a press event on Monday at Government House in Damaturu, Dr. Amshi announced the approval.
The N1,436,500,000 in funds that have been allotted, according to her, are meant to help flood victims throughout the state.
“We have carried out surveys and are still evaluating all 17 local government areas in order to identify 1,500 flood victims spread across 150 locations,” she emphasised.
Every victim would get a N50,000 cash transfer. In order to guarantee that the money is transferred straight to the recipients, we are working with international partners and particular banks.
“This initiative has received approval from the ExCo,” she added.
In a similar vein, Kaigama Umar Yunusari, Commissioner for Commerce, Tourism, and Industry, declared that the ongoing initiatives to establish modern markets in Ngalda, Fika LGA, and Yunusari town have been approved. The estimated cost of each project is N2 billion. Furthermore, four important towns—Macina, Nguru, Potiskum, and Damaturu—have been awarded construction contracts for sesame seed processing facilities.
.Umar Wakil Duddaye, the Commissioner for Works, has, in the meantime, emphasised the ministry’s initiatives to improve rural infrastructure.
“To support the state government’s agricultural revitalisation programme, the ministry is building roads from Fika to Maluri and Gashua to Massba.”
