Choose the next Osun monarch wisely, stakeholders are urged by an NGO

Following the passing of the previous Owa Obokun, Adekunle Aromolaran, the Kayode Michael Arimoro Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, has urged the king makers in Ijesha Land, Osun State, as well as the state and federal governments, to approach the selection of a new Owa Obokun of Ijesha Land with wisdom and reverence.

In addition, the NGO demanded a nonviolent selection procedure to prevent animosity and violence.

In a statement honouring the late king, the request was issued on Saturday under the heading “Tribute to Owa Aromolaran and Call for a Peaceful Selection of the New Owa Obokun of Ijesha Land.”

On September 12, 2024, the state capital of Osogbo, through a declaration signed by Chief Yinka Fasuyi, the Asiwaju of Ijesaland, announced the death of the first-class Osun king.

“With the belief that all humans must live above a globally acceptable sustainable Human Existence Index, we at The Kayode Michael Arimoro Foundation, an NGO whose core calling is providing support to widows, girl child education, and child education generally, wish to commiserate with our founder, Prince Kayode Michael Adewale Arimoro, and all the people of Ijesha Land over the recent joining of his ancestors by the Owa Obokun, Adekunle Aromolaran, the revered leader and custodian of tradition in Ijesha Land.”

“Our Foundation has closely observed the manner in which the late Owa Obokun had a significant influence on Ijesha Land. We honour his exceptional service, devotion, and unmatched commitment to the peace and unity of all people on the planet as we proudly consider his legacy. His unwavering vision for the advancement of all Ijesha sons and daughters as well as all Nigerians will always hold a special place in the hearts of the populace.

In view of this change, our Foundation strongly advises all parties involved—the federal government, the state government, and members of our own Bilaro Ruling House—to proceed with caution and reverence while choosing a new Owa Obokun, in keeping with Ijesha Land’s long-standing customs. Allowing the kingmakers to carry out their duties in choosing a youthful heir with the ambition, drive, experience, and charm necessary to uphold the people’s values, traditions, and goals is imperative.

Because the throne of Owa Obokun has historically represented power and unity, in 1896 Prince Farotimi Okunade, also known as Arimoro, the Great Prince and Warrior son of Owa Ofokutu, proposed his younger relatives to succeed him as the Owa Obokun of Ijesha Land. Consequently, it is essential to uphold the fair rotation principles within the Owa Bilaro family while making sure that the integrity of the selection process embodies the essence of our community, which is distinguished by courage, enlightenment, and unity of purpose.

The non-governmental organisation emphasised that prioritising communication in the selection process is vital to maintain a peaceful climate, emphasising that this phase is critical.

“During this critical time, dialogue should be prioritised to ensure cooperation among all members of the Bilaro Ruling House and to foster an atmosphere of peace.” We urge everyone in the community to have civil conversations and to behave politely and patiently while Ijesha Lans gets through this difficult period.

We implore all interested parties to unite in honouring Owa Obokun Adekunle Aromolaran’s legacy by looking for a new leader who has a proven track record of paving the road for a successful future for the sons and daughters of Ijesha. After the Great Owa is accorded appropriate and unforgettable final rites, may the memory of Owa Aromolaran motivate all Ijeshans to strive together towards peace and understanding, guaranteeing a smooth transition,” the statement continued.
