Engaging youth is essential to addressing the issues posed by climate change – Customs

According to the Nigeria Customs Service, youth engagement is essential in combating climate change, as solving the issues is a global undertaking that calls for coordinated effort.

It indicated a commitment to supporting the country’s efforts to mitigate climate change while also pledging devotion to environmental sustainability.

At a three-day retreat held at the National Teachers Institute Kaduna, Comptroller Ahmadu Shuaibu of the Federal Operations Unit Zone “B,” Kaduna, gave a paper on the NCS’s role in mitigating climate change, according to a statement released on Friday by Isah Sulaiman, the Customs Public Relations Officer, Federal Operations Unit, Zone B, Kaduna.

As part of the unit’s Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative, the Nigeria Customs Service Federal Operations Unit Zone B Kaduna and the Red Cross Kaduna North Division jointly organised the event, which had as its theme “Youth Involvement in Tackling Climate Change in Our Community,” from October 6 to 9, 2024.

A worldwide issue that calls for cooperation is climate change. The NCS is dedicated to assisting Nigeria’s climate change mitigation efforts as a signatory to multiple multilateral environmental agreements.

“The retreat emphasised the NCS’s dedication to environmental sustainability, with a focus on teamwork, renewable energy projects, ethical trading practices, and stopping animal trafficking.

In order to overcome the obstacles presented by climate change, we must cooperate. He emphasised that the NCS is committed to helping Nigeria mitigate the effects of climate change.

“Climate change is a pressing issue that requires urgent attention,” Shuaibu continued. To lessen our carbon impact and encourage sustainable practices, we need to take decisive action.

The retreat gave participants a forum to talk about cutting-edge strategies for mitigating and adapting to climate change, such as eco-friendly legislation, renewable energy sources, and sustainable farming methods.

“Involving young people is essential to combating climate change. Young people need to be empowered and educated to take up the cause of climate change.

At the end of the three-day retreat, attendees and organisers planted trees as a symbol of their support for environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change.

“With this initiative, Nigeria has made great progress towards addressing the urgent problems brought on by climate change. The Comptroller continued, “We will keep collaborating to advance environmental stewardship and community involvement.
