A Ghanaian activist lawyer detained in the Accra police station for anti-mining protests is visited by Sowore.

Sowore stated that Osagyefo and other activists’ incarceration is illegal and a violation of their fundamental human rights, and she spoke out against the Ghanaian government’s attempt to charge them in court.

Omoyele Sowore, a human rights advocate from Nigeria, paid a visit to Osagyefo Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a Ghanaian activist who is now in detention for planning a public demonstration. On his verified X page, Osagyefo posted an update and thanked Sowore for his steadfast support and solidarity in the fight against bad governance in Africa.

He wrote: Yesterday, at the police cell where I am being held, comrade Omoyele Sowere (@YeleSowore) paid me a visit. I would want to convey my profound thanks for his trip from Nigeria!

The rise of a new generation of African leaders who defy poverty and substandard leadership encourages me to believe that the continent will change significantly from where it is now. We are united in our cause, and Africa will be free within our lifetimes!

In response, Sowore expressed his disapproval of the Ghanaian government’s intention to charge Osagyefo and other activists, arguing that their arrest violates their fundamental human rights and is illegal.

Concerns over the treatment of activists in Ghana, where there have been cases of wrongful arrests and incarceration in the past, have been raised by this government action.

Sowore said on Facebook: “We visited Comrade Lawyer Oliver Barker @barkervogues, the convener of the Democracy Hub, who is wrongfully imprisoned for opposing bad governance in Ghana, yesterday at the Accra regional police headquarters.”

We also got to know Comrade Ralph, a young activist from @Ghfixthecountry who is brave, charming, and flexible. The movement to stop unlawful mining that has ruined their water, known as #StopGalamseyNow, is being supported by these patriots.

Oliver and other unjustly jailed individuals will appear in court in Accra this morning. We demand that the government of Ghana #Freethecitizens right away.

Between October 3 and October 5, 2024, thousands of demonstrators occupied the streets of Accra, the capital of Ghana, calling for a stop to illegal mining, popularly known as “Galamsey,” and the disastrous effects it has on the environment.

The protesters promised to keep up the pressure until the government responds to the issue in a meaningful way.

In addition, the demonstrators demanded the release of 53 young people who had been arrested on September 24 during a demonstration against illicit mining, which they claimed was contaminating the nation’s woods and waterways. The teenagers were being held in police cells.
