In just one week, the University of Calabar suspends a second lecturer for misconduct.

Allegations surfaced that Idung neglected to reimburse money obtained from students for their registration at the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT), leading to the suspension.

A lecturer at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) in the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, Dr. Joseph Idung, has been placed on suspension.

Allegations surfaced that Idung neglected to reimburse money obtained from students for their registration at the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT), leading to the suspension.

In a letter to Idung on Monday, the Registrar, Gabriel Egbe, verified the suspension.

Information surfaced indicating that Idung neglected to reimburse money taken from pupils for their NISLT introduction.

The most recent suspension, meanwhile, comes after the Senate Examination Misconduct Committee (SEMC) revealed that Dr. Joseph Akpan, the Acting Head of the Department of Pharmacology, had been fired for manipulating test results in PHM 311 (Introduction to General Antimicrobial Pharmacology).

The suspension of Akpan becomes effective on October 8, 2024.

Egbe claims that Idung’s unwillingness to return the purportedly extorted funds disappointed the government.

“To enable him to face the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACTU), which is tasked with investigating the issue, Vice-Chancellor Professor Florence Obi has ordered his suspension from university duties,” he stated.

“Dr. Idung has also been instructed to return all university property in his possession to the Head of the Department and to avoid campus unless responding to ACTU’s summons,” he stated.

Nonetheless, the letter recommends that Idung be paid half pay while under suspension from the Bursar.
