Peter Obi, a former Labour Party presidential candidate in the general elections of 2023, has stated that he is in favour of Nigerian nurses and other healthcare professionals moving overseas in search of better chances.
Peter Obi stated that professionals—including nurses—should not be deterred from pursuing opportunities elsewhere.
Speaking on Monday in Onitsha, Anambra State, Obi stressed the value of healthcare and education as vital resources for the future.
He made the argument that, given Nigeria’s population of over 200 million, there is no reason why people should be prevented from taking advantage of possibilities abroad.
Thus, he urged Nigerian authorities to concentrate on hiring more experts and emphasised that remittances from outside might greatly boost the country’s economy.
We are investing in your future; what we are doing is not charitable giving. Knowledge and health are vital to progress, therefore we must invest in them,” he stated.
In addition, he mentioned the need for nurses throughout the world and urged Nigeria’s Nursing and Midwifery Council to quit impeding the aspirations of its members to depart in search of better prospects.
“Let those who wish to go pursue their dreams, but also make investments in those who choose to stay,” Obi remarked. Remittances from the diaspora can be a significant source of income.
He made it clear that his gifts are not intended for personal benefit but rather to improve lives.
“My children will not attend this university, but I think that investing in the future is more important than just earning titles.
He said, “To assist the College of Nursing in Anyimgba in obtaining accreditation, I will be visiting them tomorrow.”
