Enugu Police Chief Tells Residents To Shun Call For Two-Day Sit-At-Home Protest In Southeast Nigeria, Others

This warning is given in response to a group purporting to be the launch of Biafran calling for a sit-at-home protest.

Pro-Biafra protestors have received a harsh warning from Enugu State Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu, who warns that any effort to undermine the state’s security and tranquilly will be faced with prompt and severe punishment.

This warning is given in response to a group purporting to be the launch of Biafran calling for a sit-at-home protest.

Two days of sit-at-home protests were planned by the organisation for Monday, October 21, and Tuesday, October 22, spanning five states in the South East and portions of the states of Delta, Rivers, and Kogi.

But state police commissioner Uzuegbu advised people to disregard a “criminally minded viral video from an unidentified individual advising them to sit-at-home on Monday, 21st, and Tuesday, 22nd October 2024” in a statement released on Sunday.

In a statement released by DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the command’s spokesperson, Uzuegbu said that the explanations and recommendations presented in the widely shared video were illogical, unjustified, and part of a calculated effort to sow discord and terror throughout the state.

The commissioner stressed that Enugu State had long since gone past these unlawful directives or suggestions to stay at home. He claims that these are frequently intended to undermine the social, economic, and mental health of the populace by disguising themselves as separatist movements.

In the statement, the commissioner said that the police, along with other security agencies, are ready to keep the state safe and secure and urged residents to continue with their legal activities without fear or intimidation.

“He warns that any individuals or groups attempting to disrupt public order will be dealt with ruthlessly,” the statement read.

“CP Uzuegbu also exhorts parents and guardians to caution their offspring from participating in any activity that jeopardises the peace and security of the nation, stressing that there would be severe legal repercussions for doing so.

In addition, the Commissioner orders all State citizens to maintain vigilance, obey the law, and report any suspicious activity or persons to the closest police station. The public can reach the Enugu State Command via email at infoenugupolice@gmail.com or by phone at 08032003702, 08098880172, or 08086671202 in case of an emergency.”
