The National Secretariat of the Union was informed of this decision, which was formally taken on Saturday during the Congress.
By impeaching its Chairman, Comrade Patrick Osaretin Osadebamwen, and his executives, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja Council, has taken a major stride forward.
The National Secretariat of the Union was informed of this decision, which was formally taken on Saturday during the Congress.
“This followed the flagrant violation of Article 5(9d) of the NUJ Constitution, which stipulates that:” the resolution says.
Subject to the National Secretariat’s approval, the State Congress will propose members for the Credentials Committee at the State Council level.
“Union members in good financial standing who do not intend to run for office in the aforementioned elections shall be selected as members of the Credentials Committee.”
In a deliberate attempt to blatantly violate the previously mentioned articles of the NUJ Constitution, the impeached Chairman “took laws into his hands” at the Congress and chose to handpick members of the Credentials Committee, according to the resolution.
“Therefore, in the exercise of the authority bestowed upon the Congress, members passed a vote of no confidence in the Chairman, and he was subsequently impeached by a two-thirds majority of members present during the Congress, along with his exco members,” the statement said.
“The Congress, hereby, invites the national leadership of NUJ to quickly step into the prevailing confusion at the FCT Council to save the face of the Union,” it said in light of the aforementioned.
A list of signatures gathered in support of Osadebamwen’s and his executive team’s impeachment was appended.
