Members of the PDP Ex-Officio Call for an Immediate NEC Meeting to Avoid Implosion in Crisis

The organisation issued the plea in the wake of what it called an intensifying crisis inside the party’s upper leadership, threatening severe repercussions should action be taken inaction.

Members of the National Ex-Officio of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) have encouraged the party leadership to make sure the NEC meeting set for October 24, 2024, goes on as planned, amid mounting internal tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The organisation issued the plea in the wake of what it called an intensifying crisis inside the party’s upper leadership, threatening severe repercussions should action be taken inaction.

The Ex-Officio members, Drs. Yunana Ilya (North Central), Nicholas Msheliza (North East Zone), Madu Chinemerem (South East Zone), Patrick Agbe (South-South), Faboyede Clement (South West), and Alhaji Ibrahim Alhaji (North West Zone), signed a press release on Friday expressing the group’s profound concern over the current situation within the PDP.

It called attention to the “dangerous turn of events” that may cause the party to become unstable.

“We have seen the recent hazardous turn of events inside our party’s upper echelons with profound dismay and anxiety. These incidents often have the ability to rock our party’s core,” the

says the statement.

In order to provide resentful party members a forum to air their grievances and look for answers, the National Ex-Officio members underlined the necessity of a NEC meeting.

The statement went on, “The NEC meeting will give members who are upset the chance to be heard and have their concerns addressed.”

They claim that the NEC must meet at least once per quarter as required by the PDP Constitution, but the members have shown that the party has not followed this requirement.

“We are sorry that our party has disregarded the provisions of its own constitution, as doing so would have prevented the emergence of numerous unresolved issues,” they said.

They argue that the party ought to regain its constitutional dominance.

Ex-officio members commended the work of the PDP Governors’ Forum, which is chaired by Senator Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi State, even though internal conflicts appear to have decreased after the Forum’s participation.

It was said that the PDP Governors’ Forum “has not only provided the needed direction but has indeed lived up to expectations through the firm and sterling leadership qualities of His Excellency, Senator Bala Mohammed.”

They added that the party is still the only credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and urged the leadership to keep positioning itself for future elections. They also lent their support to the ongoing peace initiatives meant to restore the party’s unity and strength.

The ex-officio members stated, “Nigerians still believe that PDP is the only viable alternative to the failed Bola Tinubu-led APC administration.”

Since its defeat in the 2015 presidential election, the PDP, which was previously the leading party in Nigeria, has had a number of internal problems.

The party, which took great satisfaction in representing democratic government, has faced internal conflicts and leadership disputes that have put its unity in jeopardy.

The PDP Governors’ Forum has been in the forefront of efforts to settle these disputes in recent years, but lingering problems have made it harder for it to remain stable.
