Transmission company TCN downplays nationwide blackouts, saying that the national grid collapse is a temporary disruption.

Data from the Nigerian System Operator’s webpage (niggrid.org) showed that, as of 8:16 a.m. today, the grid registered a historic 0 Megawatts (MW).

The Nigerian Transmission Company has characterised the allegations of a national grid outage on Saturday as a transient disruption in the grid.

The response follows the grid failure for the third time this week.

Early on Saturday morning, the grid collapsed, resulting in complete blackouts in several areas.

Data from the Nigerian System Operator’s webpage (niggrid.org) showed that, as of 8:16 a.m. today, the grid registered a historic 0 Megawatts (MW).

Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, responded to the collapse by saying that electricity had been restored even though the bus part of a current transformer had detonated at the 330kV Jebba Transmission Substation.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria therefore declares that at around 8:15 am today, October 19, 2024, there was a brief disruption to the national grid.

“The NCC report states that a current transformer’s bus section exploded at the 330kV Jebba Transmission Substation. As was to be expected, the protection system was triggered, opening the busbars quickly to contain the explosion and stop additional damage to nearby equipment and fire.

“The protective system’s operation caused a brief disruption in the grid.

“Our Jebba engineers have isolated the problematic current transformer by successfully completing switchings. In line with this, they have rearranged the busbar configuration and restored electricity to the station and other grid segments, according to the statement.
