Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria, has chastised African leaders for the continent’s poverty rate in spite of the continent’s enormous resources.
Speaking at a function in Bauchi State, Northern Nigeria, Obasanjo asserted that it is African politicians, not God, who have unintentionally or intentionally brought about poverty in the continent via their deeds.
According to him, the world is tired of hearing about Africa’s growing poverty, and many of the continent’s leaders are unwilling to discuss issues like wealth creation, eradicating poverty, and establishing the necessary healthcare delivery systems to support human growth.
He emphasised that as long as human activity is the root source of Africa’s poverty, human action alone would be necessary to severely devastate the continent.
“You cannot talk about developing human capacity when you don’t have what I would call adequate health delivery services for your people,” declared the former president.
“I tell people, if you don’t want to talk about poverty alleviation, talk about creating riches. The world is tired of hearing about poverty in Africa.
“Africa is not a place of poverty by God’s design. Whether on purpose or accidentally, our African leaders turned Africa into a continent of poverty.
“Mending it must also be a human action if it is a human action.”
