According to a Moscow-installed official, one person was killed Tuesday in a Ukrainian drone strike on the Russian-held city of Energodar, which is home to the biggest nuclear power facility in Europe.
In the early days of their 2022 invasion, Russian soldiers captured Energodar, which is situated in southern Ukraine on the occupied bank of the Dnipro River.
Yevgeny Balitsky, the Kremlin-installed leader of the seized section of the Zaporizhzhia region, posted on Telegram, “A cylinder tanker caught fire due to an enemy drone attack on Energodar.”
“A 1957-born man who worked at a petrol station died from shrapnel wounds,” he said.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Energodar is the subject of frequent accusations of safety violations between Russia and Ukraine.
The plant’s safety was not in danger, according to the Russian-installed administration.
Yevgeniya Yashina, a factory official, told Russian news outlets, “The plant is operating normally.”
Although it does not have complete authority over the Zaporizhzhia area, Moscow claims it as its own.
The IAEA, the UN’s nuclear inspector, has frequently called for moderation since Russia launched soldiers into Ukraine in 2022, stating that it is concerned that careless military action may result in a significant nuclear catastrophe at the facility.
