According to the Lagos State Chapter of the Tricycle Owners and Operators Association of Nigeria, it is teaching its members about the advantages and risks of utilising compressed natural gas.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Lagos, its zonal chairman, Alhaji Azeez Istijabah, stated that this would assist members in taking safety precautions while doing their business.
According to NAN, in an effort to alleviate transport issues, the Lagos State branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers launched its first 3,000 CNG commercial tricycles on 16 October for a total of N10.2 billion.
Istijabah stated: “While switching from gasoline to gas tricycles has financial benefits, safety precautions must be taken to ensure proper operation.
First and foremost, operators are not allowed to smoke or work near a naked fire.
Due to the extreme flammability of all gases, smoking is strictly forbidden when operating CNG tricycles.
The union chief also advised members to always keep three people on a journey and to refrain from packing their tricycles to capacity.
“Passengers shouldn’t be permitted in the front seat by operators.”
It is extremely risky to overload tricycles, therefore operators must exercise extreme caution and pay attention to certain safety precautions,” he continued.
Mr. AbdulAkeem Sabiu, the chairman of the Abule-Egba chapter of the organisation, also told NAN that the new development will boost and motivate the transport industry’s operators.
He claims that many of the operators are complaining about how expensive petrol is.
He said that commuters and carriers will benefit from the Federal Government’s new, less expensive CNG programs.
Sabiu called on the federal government and the state government of Lagos to provide convenient CNG refilling stations for business tricycles.
According to him, tricycles are not allowed to operate in the state’s Agidingbi region, which is home to the CNG refilling station.
“We would like the government to make it easy for us to refill our tricycles,” he stated.
