Tinubu’s reasons for firing six ministers—Presidency

Based on a performance evaluation influenced by public opinion, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reorganised his government, removing numerous ministers from their positions.

The President’s Social Adviser on Policy, Hadiza Bala Usman, oversaw a thorough evaluation process that resulted in this conclusion, according to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

In an interview with AriseTv, Onanuga clarified that the evaluation was not a casual affair and had been a component of the President’s strategy ever since the ministers were sworn in last year.

He remembered how President Tinubu made it plain during the swearing-in ceremony in August 2023 that he had the power to choose and dismiss ministers, threatening to remove anyone who failed to live up to expectations.

During a ministerial retreat in October 2023, the president reaffirmed this message and his commitment to regularly evaluating his cabinet’s performance.

The responsibility of managing a performance review, which included getting public input on the ministers’ work, fell to Hadiza Bala Usman. Nigerians were able to rate the ministers according to their efficacy thanks to the use of a technology-driven procedure.

Onanuga stated, “Hadiza asked Nigerians to score the ministers, bringing technology to it.” “The scorecard was created by the people who actually completed it, and the findings were based on concrete facts and the public’s assessment of these ministers. The President took action based on such findings.

Jamila Ibrahim (Youth Development), Mohammed Gwarzo (State for Housing), Prof. Tahir Mamman (Education), Uju Kennedy Ohanenye (Women Affairs), Lola Ade-John (Tourism), and Betta Edu (Humanitarian Affairs), who was suspended but has since been replaced, were among the ministers removed from the cabinet as a result of the review.

President Tinubu’s reorganisation is a part of his efforts to make sure his government fulfils its commitments to Nigerians and keeps making strides in important spheres of governance.
