Disco in Enugu clarifies the Mainpower takeover

In response to rumours that it has shut down since the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) licensed its subsidiary, Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has stated that it is still in operation.

As you may remember, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, or NERC, eventually gave the EERC regulatory authority earlier this week.

After EERC granted Mainpower an interim operating licence to distribute energy in Enugu State, the company assumed responsibility for the state’s electrical distribution operations.

The Mainpower takeover has caused a great deal of misunderstanding and uncertainty in the public sphere.

In response to a question from reporters on Friday, EEDC spokeswoman Emeka Ezeh stated that the firm is still in operation.

According to Ezeh, it was essential to ease the anxieties and worries that its valued clients, suppliers, service providers, and other stakeholders had voiced.

“The EEDC remains a holding company to Mainpower,” he responded when questioned about the organization’s status by a group of journalists. It continues to distribute energy in the states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo.

Therefore, we are taking this opportunity to caution Enugu State electricity consumers who are served by Mainpower, an EEDC subsidiary, to maintain their composure as the company is still dedicated to carrying on with its operations of providing electricity services in Enugu State in an effective and responsible manner.

“States are now able to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity within their geographical areas with the approval of the Electricity Act 2023 by President Bola Tinubu,” he continued.

Therefore, the state-owned Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) now has the regulatory and supervision authority in place of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

In accordance with the Electricity Act 2023, the Enugu State Government is establishing its own regulatory structure to oversee the electricity market and grant operating licenses to prospective investors who wish to conduct business in the state.
