Lagos pedestrian bridge collapses

The freshly built pedestrian bridge at Five Stars Bus Stop, inner Iyana-Isolo, along the Oshodi-Apapa Motorway, in the Lagos region, partially collapsed in the early hours of Thursday, preventing a dangerous situation.

An eyewitness reports that the event occurred early in the morning, at 6.30 am. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, or LASEMA, had to step in quickly to rescue the day.

Half of the motorway was closed when the LASEMA crew arrived because a component of the pedestrian bridge had collapsed.

According to LASEMA’s findings, the tragedy was brought on by an unidentified articulated vehicle carrying heavy machinery colliding with the pedestrian bridge, causing the bridge to fracture and then collapse.

Heavy-duty equipment, including a big forklift, was engaged to remove the obstacle in order to prevent any potential additional accidents, according to Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary, LASEMA.

The agency’s Response Team had roped off the whole bridge.

To protect public safety, decommissioning work on the pedestrian bridge’s remaining concrete components has begun, according to Oke-Osanyintolu.
