Obi Aguocha, the lawmaker for the Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, visited the IPOB leader in detention as part of the ongoing attempt to find a political solution to the ongoing detention of the group’s leader, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.
After being detained in Kenya on June 27, 2021, and then deported to Nigeria, Kanu is accused of terrorism, treason, and inciting violence through his Radio Biafra, among other offences.
The lawmaker’s media team said in a statement released on Saturday that Kanu’s legal team had recently contacted Mr. Aguocha to express dissatisfaction over their inability to communicate with the imprisoned IPOB leader.
A few days ago, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s attorneys contacted his honourable member, Obi Aguocha, who represents the federal constituencies of Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South, according to the statement. This had to do with the ongoing challenges the legal team was facing in trying to meet and obtain access to their client.
In an urgent letter to the Honourable Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, and the Department of State Security, Hon. Obi Aguocha requested their prompt involvement.
“The aforementioned meeting went well in that Hon. Obi Aguocha asked the DSS about the apparent delay in granting Mazi Nnamdi Kanu access, and the DSS responded that it was due to his attorneys’ request for the judge to recuse herself, which necessitates additional legal proceedings and is known to both parties.
On Thursday, October 24, 2024, Hon. Obi Aguocha met in person with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, accompanied by Ms. Ezioma Stella Ikpo, a member of her immediate family. During their discussion, Hon. Obi Aguocha gave Mazi Nnamdi Kanu a thorough briefing on the situation.
The legal team has now been given access to their client, the statement added.
“His legal team reached a resolution regarding Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s lack of access, and they are now granted the necessary access to their client,” the statement continued.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is keeping well and looks strong,” it said, praising the DSS leadership for managing Kanu’s medical requirements.
Hon. Obi Aguocha is happy to confirm that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has received private medical attention as recently as October 3, 2024. Hon. Aguocha also commends the new leadership of the DSS for their commendable efforts in meeting Nnamdi Kanu’s healthcare needs, including approving his request for access to private medical care and to a doctor of his choosing.
“The Honourable Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives’ extraordinary and brave effort for his prompt intervention, which has enabled these positive outcomes, is greatly appreciated by Hon. Aguocha.”
“It should be noted that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s fundamental human rights as guaranteed by the 1999 Nigerian constitution as amended and other pertinent United Nations instruments should be upheld,” the statement reads.
“Hon Obi Aguocha is still hopeful that a political solution will be found in the end, which will result in Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release as well as the peace and stability of the Southeast.”
