A building at Vidaz Estate, Sabon Lugbe extension, Abuja, collapsed, according to confirmation from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.
Five people were reportedly trapped in the event and were pulled from the wreckage, according to the police.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh said in a statement that no fatalities had been recorded in the event.
Unexpectedly, she disclosed that the structure had previously been demolished by FCT officials because it was situated in an area that had been unlawfully acquired.
However, scavengers’ tinkering with the structure in search of scrap metal weakened it a second time, finally resulting in its secondary collapse.
To avoid such occurrences, the FCT Police asked the public to respect the lines separating construction sites and destroyed buildings.
Adeh also underlined how crucial it is to avoid dangerous buildings in order to protect the people.
The collapse of a building located in Vidaz Estate, within the Sabon Lugbe extension of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has been confirmed by the FCT Police Command, she added. According to preliminary enquiries, the structure was previously dismantled by the FCT Authorities because it was situated in an unlawfully obtained land.
Scavengers who had been fiddling with the wreckage for scrap metal further undermined the building, which finally resulted in its secondary collapse.
Five people in all were successfully pulled from the wreckage, and no fatalities were reported.
In order to protect their safety and stop future events of this kind, the public is asked to observe the borders of both work sites and destroyed buildings.
