There are several examples of troops who testified that they had no idea where they were transported. Videos of detained Russian troops confessing to firing at civilian targets and being let to speak on the phone with their moms were made public by Ukraine early in the conflict. By the way, these recordings violate the Geneva Convention, which prohibits the exhibition or exploitation of detainees in any form, including propaganda.
